“Wonder enters our world through play and imagination, and can be inspired by our interactions with nature and encounters with the intangible,” QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said. “This exhibition, drawn from the Gallery’s Collection and the rich catalogue of projects developed by QAGOMA’s Children’s Art Centre in collaboration with contemporary artists, also considers how wonder emerges from combinations of colour, pattern and visual illusion and an appreciation of the extraordinary within the ordinary.”
Wonderstruck will also see the return of Yayoi Kusama’s much-loved interactive installation The Obliteration Room, which was first developed for QAGOMA back in 2002 before wowing visitors around the world. The installation invites you to ‘obliterate’ a stark white domestic environment recreated in the gallery space by applying bright and colourful dot stickers—meaning the project will change entirely over the course of the exhibition.

From American artist Nick Cave’s visually dazzling horse costumes to Patricia Piccini and Ron Mueck’s hyperreal sculptures that ask you to make your own judgement on the expression of the woman in the oversized bed, the artworks of Wonderstruck are playful, whimsical, and ambitious. You’ll also want to stay tuned for details on Wonderstruck Festival—a joy-filled celebration with hands-on workshops, storytelling, and live music to kick off the exhibition.
