Any regular South Bank visitor will know of Baba Ganouj—the Lebanese restaurant has been treating Brisbane tastebuds to their Middle Eastern eats for seven years now. But if you happen to wander past their Little Stanley Street location anytime soon and find it vacant, don’t worry, they haven’t left us—they’ve just moved to bigger and better digs a few doors down.

Now able to seat up to 200 diners, the new Baba Ganouj is quite the stunner, featuring pointed arch doorways, natural stone walls, timber battan ceilings and hanging lanterns. A spacious outdoor seating area provides a multitude of booth seating for group dinners, while indoors you can opt to perch at one of the high tables by the bar for cocktails and snacks, or snag a banquette table for a fully fledged feast.

Though the Baba Ganouj team are still sticking close to their humble Lebanese roots, the new venue definitely deserved an elevated new menu—and chef and owner Sayed Saleh has created just that. Start your journey by dipping fresh saj bread into house made dips (including baba ganouj of course) before moving on to fattoush salad and hot mezza like grilled haloumi, eggplant chips, lamb sabusek and felafel. For mains, signature dishes inlcude their ouzeh—slow cooked lamb served on a bed of oriental rice, sauce, yoghurt and cucumber—and also their shawarma platters, though you can also just opt for a banquet if you can’t decide.

On the drinks front, as well as a curated list of wines, beers and spirits, you can sip on creative cocktails like the Yala Habibi, with Golden Rum, Campari, citrus, sugar and pineapple, or the Cutecumber Martini, which combines gin, pear liqueur, apple, lemon and cracked pepper.
