Chapel Hill might not be where you’d expect to find a sleek and sophisticated date night-worthy restaurant, but here we are, racing to get a booking at Chalong, the area’s new modern Thai spot. Tucked away in a neighbourhood shopping strip, this is not your average suburban eatery—everything here is elevated, from the food to the decor.
Decked out in neutral tones, with a few pops of greenery and a bar lit by warm wicker pendant lights, the minimalist space is an aesthetic delight—but one that won’t steal your attention away from the feast in front of you. And feast you shall—in the kitchen is Garfield Pachnoi, head chef and co-owner together with Nail Saengin, who previously workedd the pans at Short Grain and Ping Pong, so you know you’re in good hands.
While you’ll definitely find a few familiar favourites on the menu—like the essential massaman beef cheek curry and pad Thai—Chalong is also keen to bring a few lesser known southern Thailand dishes to the fore. Must-try signatures include the likes of Moo Hong, a Phuket-style soy-braised pork belly with green nam jim; nine-hour slow cooked lemongrass and tamarind beef ribs; and their Asian herbs fritters with fermented chilli and cashew nut.
Before you get to the mains though, you’ll want to snack your way through bites like fried turmeric cuttlefish, grilled chicken skewers marinated in a secret recipe paste, pork and prawn potsticker dumplings and crispy chicken bao buns. If you can’t land on what to order, the banquet set menu is an uber affordable option at just $59pp.
On the drinks side of things, the cocktail line up is all about classics given a Thai twist, with mocktail options and housemade iced tea for the non-drinkers, and a lengthy list of wines, beers and spirits for everyone else.
