Take a turn off James Street, wander down Gerard’s Lane, and you’ll find the aptly named Laneway, a new hidden bagel cafe that has taken over where Cantinho used to reside. Dishing up an impressive assortment of bagels, including both breakfast and lunch options, they also offer light breakfasts, toasties, wraps, pastries and coffees, making this the perfect mid-week pitstop.

If avo on toast, eggs benny or a four cheese and caramelized onion sourdough toastie don’t strike your fancy, signature bagels on the menu include their classic breakfast bagel, stacked with bacon, fried egg, pickles, cheddar, rocket and hollandaise, and the Laneway Reuben, filled with beef pastrami, coleslaw, cheddar, caramelised onions and Russ sauce. There’s nine kinds of filled bagels all up, plus spread and egg-topped options, so you’re bound to find at least one you like.

Best of all, until 15 August Laneway are offering two-for-one breakfast items or bagels to celebrate their vibrant new artwork, commissioned by Piazza D’Oro, the coffee brand you’ll find being ground up for your morning Laneway brew. You won’t miss the mural by local artist Kiel Tillman on the roof of the hole-in-the-wall spot, but you will miss the two-for-one deal if you don’t get in quick.
