The Verdict

A satellite destination of its mothership, Maha in the CBD,  is imbued with the same charm, swagger and profusion of Middle Eastern flavours.

Resting on the cusp of the Smith and Gertrude Street intersection in Collingwood, the intimately spaced 60-seat diner from  has seen a revitalisation, transitioning from its causal bar origins into a full brasserie centred around the signature culinary style that Delia has built his empire on. 

The menu, which has been a joint collaboration between head chef  and Delia is a cleverly developed mix of snacks, small plates and mains; each utilising the intricate flavours of local produce and delicacies of the Middle Easter region. Kick off proceedings with options like the pickled octopus with Harissa and Muhammara with cos lettuce hearts to a plate of cured and charred kingfish with pickled onions, and whipped cod roe which is then topped with dill. 

The famed Iraqi flatbread is still a go, as is the house-made hummus—however opting for a roast capsicum pairing instead of the smokey lamb staple from Maha. Larger plates see grilled options like the Wagyu rump cap with a creamy harissa to diamond clams and scallops with Sujuk cream, pickled fennel and steamed sesame Bourek Buns. 

The inside is a complete re-do from its former Maha Bar fit; working alongside longtime collaborators , the Delia team has delivered a moody mix of dark-grain wood, leather finishes and marble benchtops—channelling the intimate and elegant aesthetic they've established with earlier venues including cocktail haunt, Bar Jayda which opened earlier last year. 

Maha North remains a destination for a drink with the wine list boasting an impressive 150 bottles on rotation, as well as offering a BYO option on Wednesday night and during the day on Sunday.
