Hospitality veteran Ben Russell (who you might recognise as the ex-head chef at Aria) has just opened his own venue, teaming up with Dan Clark from Woolloongabba’s 1889 Enoteca to open Rothwell’s Bar & Grill, a sophisticated bar and restaurant in the city.
Taking over the space where Jamie’s Italian used to reside, Rothwell’s has been inspired by some of duo’s favourite venues from around the world—think London’s The Savoy Grill and The Wolseley, timeless dining rooms where the food is always top notch and the service stellar. It’s not just the offering that is reminiscent of the iconic restaurants though—the space itself is as classic as they come. Cosy green leather booths under sparkling chandeliers surround a massive u-shaped marble bar in the main dining area, with a smaller Foyer Bar just inside the doors for those just wanting a drink and a snack.
Whether you’re dropping in for a light lunch to long, wine-fuelled dinner, you can expect to dine everything from snacks of steak tartare with potato crisps and crab with potato, saffron and black pepper to mains of Moreton Bay bugs with Cafe de Paris butter and roast lamb. Pasta hasn’t completely left the building, with a handful of creative Italian plates like gnocchi with blue cheese sauce and tagliarini with sea urchin, caviar, butter and chives on the menu, and of course, plenty of steaks coming off the grill. Personally, we’re drooling over the beef wellington with red wine sauce, a stunner of a dish that’s designed for a minimum of two.
Just here for a tipple? Rothwell’s Foyer Bar boasts of having the best martini in town, alongside a list of other classic cocktails like old fashioneds, negronis and Hemingway dacquiris. And don’t even get us started on the wine list—or the dedicated Armagnac cart for late night digestifs.
