After a stunning multi-million dollar glow-up, Greek fine diner Alpha is back in our lives again.
For the unacquainted, Alpha first opened on Castlereigh Street back in 2013. For its 2021 refresh, DS17 interior designer Paul Papadopoulos has worked a little magic over the space, retaining the sweeping ceilings and warm, muted palette, but adding in white-washed walls, American oak, creamy marble, and some unique Thonet chairs. There's also a handcrafted feature wall carved with ancient Greek letters.
As for the food, some of executive chef Peter Conistis hero dishes have remained, like the scallop moussaka, slow-roasted lamb, and Alpha spanakopita. The rest of the menu has been reimagined along with head chef James Roberts (China Doll, Est.) and an of-the-moment theatre-style kitchen complete with a fiery Josper Oven for an aroma-inducing charcoal cooking experience.
Highlights include feta brined roast chicken with tourlou tourlou and a vegan-friendly smoked eggplant pie with cauliflower kapama and coconut yoghurt.
We're also excited to see that almost half of the wine list features unique Greek wines—giving Sydney more opportunity to bask in the glory of some lesser-known grapes of the Mediterranean.
